Elbo Room Restaurant Celebrating Basil Festival in Mumbai

Do you know about the Basil festival? "The Basil Festival (Tulsi Mahotsav) has become the most-cherished festivals on the calendar of the Basil farmers in Azamgarh India since they began cultivating Basil. It is held every year at the end of the Basil harvest in Azamgarh. People brought together from all over the world to carry on the mission of health and wellness globally on this occasion.

Basil is one of the most easily available herbs in an Indian kitchen garden. We worship it and hence the easy accesses. And when it comes to Ayurveda there is a plethora of illnesses that these little leaves can cure. However, Basil these days is used more in Italian and Northeast/ Southeast Asian cooking.

So if you are looking to eat something that is Basil friendly and not the same Old Italian Pesto, then here is something for you!

Elbo room has a Basil festival going on. They are serving their patrons a few interesting dishes innovated with a dash of basil. We managed to sneak out a few recipes for you to try at home. So let’s start with refreshing drink

Senorita Surprise drink at Elbo room

Ingredients
One cup Fresh Watermelon (Cut pieces)
1/2 Cup red wine
3 tablespoons vodka
Fresh basil leaves 2-3 nos
2 teaspoons sugar syrup

Muddle the watermelon with a dash of sugar syrup. Add the basil leaves and lightly muddle. Add the wine and shake. Double strain into the chilled margarita or martini glass

Before we start sharing the recipes, here’s a tiny tip that you might want to know: In cooking the basil used is typically referred to as “sweet” basil. Basil is mostly used freshly in cooking and added almost at the last moment. This is done as cooking too quickly would destroy the flavor.

6 fresh basil leaves, chopped
2 tomatoes, sliced
4 ounces fresh mozzarella cheese, sliced
1/8 teaspoon red pepper flakes

4 large ripe tomatoes, sliced 1/4 inch thick

Twisted Fish - Special Coastal Food Restaurant in Khar

Indulge in special coastal food fine dining restaurant in Khar. This restaurant is opened for only seafood. You can place your order and get everything you want to eat. Staying so close to the bay, an asaal Mumbaikar can never stay away from this Jhinga, pom fret and prawns. We tell you about Twisted Fish, a newly opened coastal food special restaurant in Khar, Mumbai.

Owned by two quite young Salian brothers, Twisted Fish is a stone throw away from Khar station. The restaurant is housed inside The Unicontinental, which probably might give you a feel that you have entered a fine dine. But it is not actually a fine dine but a place where you can walk in with a thought that ‘I will eat my fish with bare hands’. In order to keep it a homely affair, the cutlery includes steel plates and copper glasses, just like home. There is nothing coastal about the venue though, but I was informed that there soon will be a live counter for appams and dosas.

Twisted Fish Restaurant Khar

Skipping my vegetarian team this time, I went all by myself and enjoyed my dinner with the co-owner Varun Salian. When Varun handed me the menu, I was a little surprised with the way it looked. The fat and elaborate menu is encompassed inside a nice wooden case. For a fish lover in me, it was more like a Masterchef’s mystery box. I opened the box to read a nice blend of Mangaloreans and Goan specialties. No price for guessing that the owners are Mangloreans!

Seafood at Twisted fish restaurant

I started my meal with a Mixed sea food broth (Rs.190), if I was to tell you how it tasted it was a mini Arabian sea in my mouth. The broth had it all; shrimps, squids and Indian salmon flavored with sauces. With the soup being so delicious, I settled down to the simple Fish tikka (Rs.330), which was perfectly cooked and the flavours did wake my taste buds up. Now the deal is that they have more that three pages of appetizers and Tandoors, so you better know what you want or you’ll just spend an hour turning pages and figuring out what to order.

While discussing the food and restaurants, I was quite thrilled to know their plan of action; soon they plan to start an offer of big fishes for bigger groups. So you know you are treating your friends at Twisted fish call in an hour or two before you enter and book a table and inform them that you want a big fish. They will give you a fat discount on that fat fish. Apart from this they also have corporate lunch on their list.

For the mains, I was suggested; I try Meen Ghashi (Rs.240) with Neer dosa (Rs. 30). To be very honest with you I will go back for just these two things. Meen Ghashi is fish cooked in thick coconut milk, tempered with authentic southern spices. The Neer dosa was so light and soft that it just melted as I ate it.

With the sweet jaw I have, I was quite disappointed to see just the basic desserts on the menu. I was expecting my dinner to end with a nice Payasam. But it wasn’t a part of the menu.

The place is teething but undoubtedly knows the food right. What bothers is, their menu looks confusing, with Chinese and North Indian food on it. This might be a good option right now but eventually they should rather settle down with their niche than having their figures dipped in too many bowls at a time.
